National Advocacy Seminar “Climate Change and Women’s Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR): following the COP21 in Paris”

A National Advocacy Seminar on Climate Change and Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) following the recently held COP21 in Paris was organized by Khan Foundation on 24 February at Democracy Auditorium. The main objective of the Seminar was to disseminate the final resolution of the COP21, arrived at in Paris, in December 2015 and highlight the next crucial steps as to how to move forward with the new paradigm that evolved in Paris. Dr QaziKholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF), was the Guest of Honour at the Seminar. Among others media representatives, GO-NGOs stakeholders and academicians were present. Advocate Rokhsana Khondker, Executive Director of Khan Foundation presided over the seminar. The key note paper was presented by Ms Nausheen Khan, Research Coordinator & Sr. Lecturer, The Millennium University.

Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad said, climate change issue is affecting social, economic, even political condition but above all natural calamities are remarked as vulnerable situation. Scarcity of drinking water and energy might be the examples. There is also a good news that human rights have been included in the issue of climate changefor the first time. PKSF is trying to allocate money for the regional development organizations to face climate issue, he added.

Advocate Rokhsana Khondker said, generally the activities which are conducted by the NGOs would be prior by the policy makers of the government later; this is happened because NGOs are capable to bring out the actual scenario of the society. In this way the development sectors will definitely face the climate issue. She delivered her thanks to all participants for joining the seminar.

The seminar also aims to share views on the progress made in Bangladesh to raise awareness on climate change and associated SRHR issues and to conduct lobbying by targeting law makers, policy planners, decision-makers and other key influential partners including the civil society and the non-governmental entities strategically to ensure that SRHR remains high on the agenda both at the national and international level with regard to tackling and remedying the detrimental impacts of climate change.

Government officials, civil society activists, local community representatives, NGOs and our media partners have been presented to participate with a view of highlighting key issues at the national policy level as well as raise awareness among general public in their respective domain of work. Additionally, experts from the Bangladesh Delegation in Paris were there to provide their insights on the resolutions arrived at in COP21 and the next steps for moving forward in line with the key links between climate change and human rights, gender equality and SRHR.
