Institutionalization of Democracy
Strengthening democratic governance, transparency, and accountability across Bangladesh
Introduction
Democracy works best when people trust it, participate in it, and see it working in their daily lives.
Since 1993, Khan Foundation (KF) has been working to make democracy stronger, fairer, and more inclusive in Bangladesh. From the national parliament to local communities, KF supports democratic institutions, encourages citizen participation, and promotes accountability—so that governance truly serves the people.
To make democracy work in everyday life, strong national leadership is essential. This is why KF's work begins with the country's highest democratic institution—the Parliament.
Programmes
Parliamentary Practice
KF strengthens parliament—supporting MPs, championing women's leadership, and linking national policy to local needs.
A strong parliament is the backbone of democracy. KF works closely with Members of Parliament from all political parties to help them better represent people's voices and respond to real-life needs. By supporting MPs to make better laws, ask the right questions, and ensure transparency and accountability in government decisions, KF strengthens the overall democratic process.
Special attention is given to women leaders to ensure that parliament reflects the diversity of the people it serves. Recognizing that democracy must also connect to local realities, KF strengthens the link between parliament and local government to ensure national decisions are grounded in community needs.
Strengthening Local Government
make it more short like before KF strengthens local government—building leaders' skills, improving service delivery, and promoting women's leadership and citizen participation.
Democracy begins where people live, and strong local governance is the cornerstone of a thriving democratic society. KF strengthens local government institutions and elected representatives to ensure communities are served effectively, fairly, and transparently.
By working closely with local leaders, KF enhances their skills, improves coordination among local government institutions, and strengthens service delivery, while promoting women's leadership and encouraging active citizen participation in decision-making.
KHAN Foundation has been working in this area for over three decades by involving all tiers of local government, training Union Parishad Members, Chairmen, Vice-Chairmen, and Women Members across the country. Building on this understanding of local governance, KF has established clear objectives to guide its work.
Election Monitoring and Voter & Civic Education Program
KF strengthens electoral integrity—monitoring elections and promoting voter and civic education for transparent, accountable democratic participation.
Free, fair, and credible elections are fundamental prerequisites for establishing democracy and ensuring good governance. A transparent electoral process not only reflects the will of the people but also strengthens public trust in democratic institutions. Recognizing this, KF places democracy and good governance at the core of its mission and works actively to promote electoral integrity in Bangladesh.
Against a backdrop of political polarization, electoral violence, and limited civic awareness, KF's Election Monitoring and Voter & Civic Education Program was designed to strengthen democratic practices by fostering informed participation, accountability, and transparency throughout the electoral cycle—before, during, and after elections.
Ensuring Transparency and Accountability
KF promotes governance, accountability, and integrity—addressing corruption and empowering citizens for transparent public service delivery.
Promoting Governance, Accountability, Transparency & Integrity
Ensuring transparency and accountability is fundamental to building good governance and a corruption-free society. Recognizing this, KF has been actively working to promote integrity, accountability, and democratic values across public institutions. To expand and strengthen its role in governance reform, KF initiated the programme "Promoting Governance, Accountability, Transparency and Integrity."
Through this programme, KF seeks to address systemic corruption, enhance citizen engagement, and foster responsive and transparent public service delivery. By empowering civil society and encouraging citizen oversight, the initiative contributes to strengthening democratic governance from the grassroots to the national level.
